I reached my 50% editing goal I set for myself last week with The Lost Librarian’s Grave. My new goal for this week is 75%. I recently edited two ocean/water-based stories,* and was thinking about them when we happened to swing by a Whole Foods down in Santa Cruz** to grab some miscellaneous groceries and such, so it comes as no surprise that some high seas themed drinks caught my eye when we were passing the liquor section, strategically located right by the bathrooms.

My favorite was “The Kraken,” which I thought had a fun, imaginative label. If a couple of bottles of this intoxicating rum doesn’t inspire you to go pirate and become the Terror of the Spanish Main, nothing will!

This bottle of Gray Whale Gin is “Perfected With Six Californian Botanicals.” Does that mean it is healthy, packed full of antioxidants, bioflavonoids, and all manner of filthy witchery, as well as providing seventy-seven servings of vegetables in each blue bottle?

This stuff is more my speed, being sparkling water. I have to admit that I don’t generally associate the Alps with “liquid death,” but they do make nice sparkling water and the label certainly caught my eye.
Pretty good stuff as it turned out. I found myself wanting to belt out a few stanzas of “Dead Man’s Chest” after slamming down a few of these.***

*** Shaun Cronick kept the poem going, turning it into the drinking song I think it is supposed to be, kind of like that bottles of beer on the wall song that people start singing when the party gets to that stage where people are trying (or past caring) to be obnoxious. He got up to twenty-three dead men; I wonder if I might bring it up to an even fifty one of these days when I’m not so busy editing other peoples’ stories?

I love me some Kraken! I had a friend who made me a shirt with that label many years ago. I nearly wore it everyday.

That sounds like a great product. Do you still have the shirt?
I had no idea that Kraken stuff was so popular, though I can see why–between the eye-catching package and learning from multiple people now that it is a tasty product as wellf, I’d say they have a winner!

I saw Kraken advertized while i was stil living in S.A, out of a Metal Hammer book. Never thought i would ever know how it would taste, then one day i saw a lable ot our local storeβ¦ last oneβ¦ best money i ever spent. Living in the netherlands i now live with the knowledge that if i want to release the Kraken! Its five minutes walk for meπ

My wife is into Liquid Death! I don’t like carbonated water that much so I’ve avoided it thus far. I have seen that brand of rum before and I do think the label is quite clever and appealing.

Does she like the flavor, etc. of it better than other sparkling waters, or does the branding amuse her (or both)?
I found that it isn’t too bad as carbonated waters go, though personally, I didn’t really see where it tastes any different than other waters. I mostly go for cheaper stuff in our area that still tastes good, such as Crystal Geyser. Lately, though, the regular stores seem to have trouble keeping the less expensive sparkling waters in stock so I’ve gotten used to drink more plain water, though I do like the carbonated stuff.
I ended up giving up sodas, such as Diet Coke and Pepsi, back in 2011 and sparkling water is what I went to instead. It ended up being a crutch for a few years, but now I can take it or leave it, though I still enjoy some bubbles from time to time.
Yes, it is a really cool label, I agree. I don’t really drink rum too often or know much about it, so all things being equal I’d probably buy a product like Kraken just based on the cute label.

She drinks other sparkling drinks from time-to-time but it seems like Liquid Death is one of her favorites. I drink about one soda a month these days so I know exactly what you mean about giving it up. I can’t get into diet sodas or sparkling water and find them a bit too bland. I’d rather have just straight water or soda when I really want to treat myself but when I still worked in my office, everyone was downing Le Croixs so I know it is popular with many people.

Well Ann I can vouch for the Kraken as the girls at work gave me a bottle last year as a birthday present π€not bad , I think itβs all gone now π π π .

That’s good to hear, Pat. Seems like it would be noble stuff. I wonder if that explains your nice output and high skill with such nautical projects as the Nina, the Roman galley, swamp terrain, etc. ?
Channel the Kraken! π

Yes, “The Kraken” does seem pretty tempting; seems like there would be worse ways to spend a day or two. π
Thank you, I’m still hard at it, should be over 60% by close of business today. Also sent out a bunch of my own stuff, which I’ve gotten back with a “no thank you” or has been siting around for quite some time, to various magazines today. I’d been meaning to do that for a while now, but have gotten sidetracking from doing quite a few things by my editing chores.

Thank you, Dave. Indeed inspiration does come in many shapes and sources. I have to admit, when I put up this post I wasn’t thinking about pub signage, but Eric is right! π

Oh Ann! I’m contemplating building to modern buildings for Marvel Crisis Protocol at the moment, and your Rum bottle labels are making me think these would make really cool signage for a local pub!

That’s a great idea! Los of potential signage at your local, neighborhood liquor-grocery store! π
