Urnafortunus: Herald of Nurgle

So I’ve been working on Becky the Bloat Drone still, but I also finally got this handsome fellow done.   I’ve had him for a very long time.  Despite having only now finished painting him, he’s been popping up primed with various colors in games now and again since 2013.  Talk about an Unpainted Veteran of the Long War!

He’s a Kromlech “Morbid Spawn” model.

This resin mess started out his (?) career as a nameless chaos spawn in equally nameless space marine armies.    He spent most of his early days furiously trying to come to grips with fire warriors before they gunned him down; usually quite successful thanks to the prevalence of doomcasters in those days.  He’s also run with Daemonkin, and there was a Chaos Undivided time, which he doesn’t like to talk about, when he had a green body with one blue tentacle, one red, and one purple.  His colleagues gave him the name Ezekyle to mock him.  Those were dark days indeed.  Happily, he has more recently found a new calling as a Herald of Nurgle or as they are styling them now, a Poxbringer.

His mighty array of weapons, the huge, rather nasty maw, that monstrous right arm (talk about a power fist!) and of course the varied spiky bits and last but not least that deadly triad of tentacles fully equips him, I’d say, to be every bit as formidable as a jumped-up plaguebearer with a balesword, a prehensile tongue, and a mouthy nurgling sidekick.

Once I get the Poxbringer, which came with the Nurgle battle force, painted then Urna will probably graduate once again to a counts-as Spoilpox Scrivener.  His visage certainly seems to fit the powers a Scrivener brings to the table, i.e. makes plaguebearers step more lively and fight harder.  I imagine any daemon in the ranks foolish enough to slack off or malinger will soon regret it.  Pop said malinger into his Motivating Maw, give him a bit of a chew then spit him out again.  I bet the rest of the unit would be falling all over itself to be the first to expend that extra two inches of movement or roll a 7+ with his sword!  His motivating speech:  “Shirkers will be shredded, malingers mauled and thieves throttled!”  Perhaps instead of counting diseases he has a mania for perfect formations with lovely, straight columns and ranks?  Who knows the mind of Chaos?

Always finding odd uses for that Nihilakh Oxide paint!

I call him (?) Urnafortunus or Pot Luck, because that is how I felt painting him.  I tried various experiments or just went with my whims of the moment, and kept what I liked and repainted what I didn’t.  A lot was done on the fly while watching Netflix with my husband.  As usual I’ll catalog some of what I remember doing for anyone who is interested and my own future reference.

I did the skin with the usual white primer followed by Athonian Camoshade, then Agrax Earthshade, more Camoshade with some patches of yellow and orange glazes.  Highlights were done with Nurgling Green.  Used rust washes, some Baal Red, Carroburg Crimson, Nurgle’s Rot, and of course Blood for the Blood God on the skin until I liked the final result, or more accurately I had reached that sweet place where if I kept working on it I would be more likely to make the model worse rather than better.

Some of the small, bright red tentacles were painted with Tallarn Flesh, then washed with Bloodletter and then brightened up with a gloss varnish.  With others I experimented with a bit of watered-down Blood for the Blood God.

Not his best side, but I’m not really sure he has one….

For the three big tentacles I used  a mysterious and seemingly endless series of green, black, brown, purple, and blue washes.   Then a final wash of glossy Nuln Oil, followed by giving the suckers a final wash of Biel-Tan to brighten them up a bit with regular Nuln Oil on the tentacle talons.  The teeth and horns were just multiple coats of Nuln Oil.

I decided to use rust washes in the mouth and also where the bones are sticking out.  I was going to paint the bones more traditionally, but in the end I decided this daemon had a weird, blackened skeleton so more Nuln Oil there.  Going back to the mouth, I decided the various nasty bits in there needed a little brightening up, but not too much, so I did some highlights using various colors such as Ratskin Flesh and so on.  I might eventually brighten it up some more but for now I’m happy with it.

Posting with a cultist for a size comparison shot.

So I’m going to continue my work on my bloat drone, though it is looking more and more like I’m not going to get it done by the end of the month in time for Azazel’s Decembuary Challenge.  Still he has apparently become the challenge guy extraordinaire, which is fun, and he has one for February as well.  So if I must eat the bitter ashes of defeat and disappointment in January, then perhaps for next month I’ll finish the bloater and complete the next challenge too and taste the ambrosia of victory with both the paintbrush and the dice cup!

Chaos Symbol Clip Art

Flesh Hounds of Distraction

So I completed a unit of five Kromlech gnaws well over a year ago, but I recently found the first two pictures in my drafts folder and thought I might as well post them.  Five is sort of the magic number (in addition to eight of course) because I use them as a stand in for flesh hounds of Khorne and that is the minimum number to form a pack of these gribblies.

I wish Kromlech had more than six different sculpts of gnaws so I could buy more different looking ones and expand my pack of giant squig daemon thingies.  I’ve used them in games a lot and they’ve died a lot (perhaps I should call them flesh hounds of Distraction?) and as expected massacred more than their share of imperial and xenos scum alike.  I’m sure Khorne would approve for “Khorne cares not whe-” … well, you get the idea.

The third picture below is much later, from the most recent game of 40K I played in February 2017.  They are pretty meaty beasts; I could almost see an ork, bloodletter, or human sorcerer riding one into battle.  Maybe not the one with the ridge of dorsal spines though.

They always seem to end up in a conga line for some reason.  Too bad they don’t have arms!

So I have one one gnaw left that I’ve never painted; the only one coincidentally who has a proper nose. I have avoided the official flesh hounds for a number of reasons. Foremost is because I don’t care for the daemon meets ceratopsian look. I figure at about $10 per model I should at least like the sculpts. Also, I’ve found GW’s resin to be very hit or miss in terms of quality.

Not sure if I’m going to need more flesh hounds, but if I do I still have the gnaw with a nose to paint as well as a box of chaos warhounds I put together but haven’t primed yet. For now though the small pack of five is fulfilling the role I want for my giant daemon dog grinning squig thingies.  Lord Khorne and Lady Distraction are both well pleased!

Ork Goliath Mine

In the spirit of working on projects I had left half-finished when I took my break from miniatures, I recently completed this goliath mine from Kromlech.  The first time I had heard of a goliath mine was when I saw one at a military museum many years ago.

I also started a building a unit of tankbustas.  The nob, with the mine controller, is again from Kromlech.  I might do a little more dry brushing on the nob, but I haven’t decided yet.  If I had him to do over again I would consider experimenting with liquid green stuff and see if I could hide the seam where his arms attach to his torso.

I might also try adding some dust to the treads on the mine, but then again I might not.

So moving forward the plan is to build some more rank and file tankbusta boyz.  After more than four years of using nothing for elites in my army except nobz, I think it is time to add a little variety.

I’m not sure why they wear great coats and winter hats in the desert.  Perhaps they are in a cold desert or more likely being orks they are just crazy and/or the heat doesn’t affect them like one would reasonably expect, because everyone knows (when they think about it) that orks are much tougher than weedy gits like humans and eldar and such.

More Happy, Red Friends

My first walking mouth gets some new friends.

I finished two more Kromlech “Gnaws” the other day.  They come in packs of three, so that finishes off the ones I have for now.  They are solid, resin casts, so I didn’t have too much modelling work to do.  Just cleaned off flash and trimmed some mold lines.  The pieces didn’t come with bases and I thought that regular infantry bases were too small so I used terminator bases, which seem to be the right size.

My husband was right about one thing.  He looked at them and said, “They seem a little too happy for Khorne.”  Yeah, I agree, they probably would have looked better as minions of Nurgle.  But maybe they are happy because they have just been unleashed from the warp and are anticipating the orgy of violence to come?  Or maybe Khorne has a sense of humor after all?

Good things seem to be coming in three’s lately.  My next piece I’m putting the finishing touches on tonight is my second thunderwolf cavalry model.  They don’t have too much in common with gnaws except they also come three to a box.  So it’ll be a Space Wolf day soon as I stoically paint toward my long dreamt goal of having enough Space Wolves to actually play a game without having to proxy Ultramarines!

“Make sure you get my good side, Mortal!”

“Make sure you get my good side, Mortal!”

I have been working on painting some Kromlech “Gnaws” lately. They come in packs of three and there are currently two sets of different sculpts available. My favorite right now is this guy with the lovely cluster of cheek warts. I doubt they’ll get much use for me in games, though I might dabble with trying to summon a unit of daemons with my weirdboy and run them as Flesh Hounds of Khorne. I suppose I could also use them as markers when someone gets turned into a chaos spawn. They don’t really look like spawn lacking random eyes, tentacles, shifting mouths and so on, but they are about the right size and have a daemonic look, albeit in a walking mouth sort of way.

My thinking, when I painted them, was on Flesh Hounds so I painted them kind of a rusty red-brown color. But I think with their cheerful, toothy expressions, they’d work well painted as Nurgle Gnaws. In any case, I have two done and I’m working on a third. I’ll need five total if I’m going to use them as summoned hounds.

They’ve been fun to paint. It is nice taking a break from painting models festooned with lots of little fiddly pieces of gear and ornate symbols on their armor. I hope to finish the third model sometime over the weekend, and then work on completing my second thunderwolf, which is starting to come together.

Moar Boyz: Trukk Squad Done

Ork Hard Boy Trukk SquadI finished my ‘ard shoota boyz trukk squad after several months of work.  They are mostly armed with Kalashnikovs, which have proven a robust and effective assault rifle in the far future.  I painted enough orks so that I can run them with just shootas or I can include a rokkit or big shoota, as well as two different choices of nob.  One is decked out in a full suit of armor with a shield made out of a vehicle door.  The other nob is more refined, standing with his arms folded behind his back, serene and seemingly above the fray in his commissar’s great coat.

I used a lot of Kromlech bits for this project.  Armored torsos of course, as well as a few sets of running legs.  The heads were mostly from Spellcrow, as were the arms, which are quite a bit larger than GW ork arms.  Not quite big enough for a nob but larger than a boy.  This suited me just fine because I view these guys as a sort of elite squad, not quite nobz but certainly a cut above regulars.

My nob with the door was a GW fantasy model I added a power klaw and a piece clipped from the rear quarter panel of a trukk.  The commissar nob was a Kromlech model.  This fit perfectly since i try to model my orks as a sort of psuedo-Soviet force.  This works particularly well thematically when they have Guard allies, I think.

The Lost Lost Orks Return: Shoota Boy #9

I haven’t been playing or painting for 40K for several months and consequently haven’t been updating this blog.  (Not updating my blog or playing 40K makes my Hungry the Warboss cry.)  I was finding the hobby a little stale, as I periodically do, but after a break I’ve refreshed myself and have started painting again.

Instead of beginning brand new projects like I usually do after a hiatus, this time I decided to actually work on things I left half-finished back before Thanksgiving.  First up, completing a twelve ork shoota boy squad.  This guy here, who I finished a couple of days ago, is squad member number nine.

soviet ork with ak

I was pleased with how this guy turned out.  As usual my cell phone camera isn’t all that great and I think he looks better in person than the photo.  (Better than the other way around I guess!)   I used Kromlech armored torsos for these guys because the squad is supposed to be ‘ard boyz.  The legs and head on this one is also Kromlech, the arms are from Spellcrow, and the kalashnikov is from an eastern European company I forget the name of.  The only thing that is Games Workshop is the base, sand, and paint.

Good to be back and painting again.

Next Time: More Shoota Boyz

Moar Boyz!

four recently painted orks

I finished painting the first four boyz of what will be another trukk squad of twelve orks.  I assembled them mostly from Kromlech bits.  I used Kromlech’s armored torsos and mixed in some heads with helmets from Spellcrow because I might occasionally field them as 4+ armor save ‘ard boyz for friendly games.  The idea is they think of themselves as an elite unit and we know that when orks believe something it often can come true.

four recently painted orks 02

I forget where I bought the guns, which is unfortunate because properly ork-scaled Soviet weaponry isn’t that easy to find.  Fortunately I bought enough to complete the squad and then some in case I want to expand them to a battlewagon unit.

The arms were also from Spellcrow.  They are noticeably larger than standard GW ork arms, though not too big, I think in keeping with their air of superiority or perhaps delusions of grandeur.  Maybe they spend a lot of time in-between battles doing curls and push-up’s with their hands close together?

I’m using a mix of Kromlech ‘running legs’ and standard GW ones.  I like the dynamic look the running legs give the squad versus the standard legs, which make the boyz look like they are standing around.

I magnetized the big shoota arm on the ork with the gas mask in case I want to use him as a mek in the future.  I also put a Kromlech backpack on him, so he would look different than the other meks I’ve modeled using GW back pieces.

The nob will be next as well as more members of the squad.  I’ve enjoyed working on them so far though I must confess I’m not really looking all that forward to building my third trukk.

Next Time: Project Necron.
