Sixty Day Miniatures of Magnitude Painting Challenge! (May-June 2020)

Time for another painting challenge!  This time the idea is to paint at least one model that represents a creature, machine or terrain piece that is on the larger side.  Aircraft, daemon engines, tanks, giants, trains, cavewomen riding mammoths, ships, and beasts that are great, writhing masses of tentacles, eyes, and maws that tumbled down from the stars or crawled up out of the sewer all will find a home in this challenge.

(Note that if you click on the pictures,  they will take you to the artists’ websites.  I’ve included some examples below of projects that would work for this challenge.)

Rules of the Challenge

  • The challenge closes on July 3rd, 2020 at midnight (last place on Earth).  The project must be completed, but if you can’t get your pictures posted by that date, it is fine.  Just post them as soon as you can.
  • Models must represent a creature at least the size of an ogre or small giant.  Machines must represent something that is at least as large as a medium-sized armored vehicle or single-seat aircraft.
  • Terrain pieces and dioramas are also welcome.  (See examples below.)
  • Any scale is welcome.  The miniatures can be small but have to represent things that would be large at 1:1 scale.  Also, there is nothing to say it has to be a miniature.  If you want to paint a mural, put a coat of paint on your house, refinish a good-sized piece of furniture, those would all count too as long as it is a painting or staining project.
  • Projects can be works in progress at the start of the challenge or you can begin something new.
  • You can complete one model or as many as you want.  Basing is great, but is optional.
  • Questions, comments, ideas?  Let me know in the comments.

If you paint small models during the challenge that would strongly fit thematically with your larger miniature, you can include them in a group shot.  For example, if Azazel painted an APC, like the one pictured below, and also painted some suitable space marine passengers to go along with it, he could include the marines in the group shot.

Dioramas are also welcome for the challenge.  In these cases the whole is greater than the sum of its parts so you are not required to include a large creature or dominating terrain feature, although you may.  Pat included a good-sized wall in his “Desert Attack,” but the diorama would have qualified for the challenge without the wall because there is plenty going on here without it!

A single building will qualify for this painting challenge.  Dave built a Wells Fargo Way Station as part of of diorama, but the building alone would qualify too.  As you can see, he went to the effort to model the inside as well.  (Click on the image to see the outside of his building and the overall diorama.)

Wudugast’s rat-ogre and its slightly smaller friend would both qualify for the challenge.  If he painted the ratman, with the spiked club and shield, on the far right during the challenge, it would fit thematically with the others and he could include it in a group shot (like the one below) if he wanted.

Aircraft, like this representation from WWI by John, could fly into the challenge.  Any sizable machine or vehicle from any historical period as well as from milieus that only exist in the imagination are fair game.

Trolls can come in many shapes and sizes and fortunately a lot of them can stand eye to eye with an ogre.  Some have interesting professions and hobbies too, such as playing in death sports, football leagues, or both at the same time.

As for me, I hope to finally finish a pig demon-looking thing that a friend asked me to paint for him so long ago now that he apparently forgot I still had the miniature.  Heck, I forgot about the pig demon too until I happened to find it when I was organizing my hobby room/office.  So this challenge will push me to put pig demon toward the top of my painting queue and get it back into my friend’s hands before the end of the Aquarian Age!

With then still WIP poxwalker #18 to demonstrate scale.

The pig demon is my first priority, but maybe I can squeeze in Becky the Bloat Drone here too.  If so, my post-Heresy Death Guard forces will wax mighty indeed comprising this daemon engine and a full 20 zombie squad (hopefully) of poxwalkers.  Let the galaxy tremble!

After this painting challenge ends, I’m going to take July off from running painting challenges. Azazel has written that he might be doing a Jewel in July challenge for 2020 and if he does I’ll be painting for that.

  25. Hmmm, hmmm. I wasn’t planning on any challenges this month (or next), so I could focus on cleaning out what’s in my queue. But just so happens that I’m painting an Ogre right now, that *might* get done by that time. I also had planned on tackling one other big piece, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself!

    • If you get your ogre done I’m sure they would love to be able to preen and brag to their frenemies, hanger’s-on, and bullied cohorts that they were the subject of a massive photo shoot because they “‘r juz dat purtty!” 🙂 Plus you’d kind of have an ogre motif going on. Is the ogre you are working on now another Blood Bowl ogre or something else?

        • Heh, nice. More Blood Bowl ogre are always welcome. Just out of curiosity, can you field more than one ogre or other large player on a team?

          • Sorta. Most teams have the option for 1 Big Guy. However, there is an Ogre team with up to 6 Ogres. The rest of the team is Snotlings. They typically don’t do well. 😉

            There is another team, “Chaos Renegades” (formerly known as Chaos Pact), which can have 1 Ogre, 1 Minotaur, and 1 Troll. Tons of brute strength on that team. They are not an ideal team, because of some of their Nega-traits, but I find them to be pretty fun. I especially like to watch my opponents bug out, the first time I set up all 3 big guys on the line. Haha!

            • Oh, that’s right I had forgotten about Ogre/snotling teams. They seem like they’d be funny/fun though. I assume there are a lot of attempts to have a snotling get the ball and then have an ogre throw said snotling?

              The Chaos Renegades sound like fun painting and lore-wise. What kind of negative traits do they have? Stuff like not getting along or going berserk and such? I can imagine that if your line had an ogre, a minotaur and a troll that your normal-sized opponents might not be too keen on matching strength with strength, lol.

              • Yea, you pretty much got it. Snotlings are weak, tend to die when thrown (or punted now). And generally don’t do much at all.

                Experienced coaches will also tell you that Big Guys suck in general. Nearly all of them require some sort of roll before you take an action. Failing that roll, often leaves them standing around, picking their nose, and maybe losing their tackle zones. i.e. completely useless.

                For the Ogre team…that means your 6 key players could potentially ‘All decide not to play ball today’. That’s where it gets frustrating.

                Same goes with the Chaos Renegades having 3 Big Guys on the team. But some of the races also have “Animosity”, which means another roll, if they try to Pass or Handoff the ball. Been a few times where I finally get the chance to score, start making the play, then totally stalled because my guy decides he hates the Skaven who is in perfect position to catch and make a TD!

    • As long as the gun represents something large, say with the mass of at least a 9 foot or so small giant/ogre, it sounds good. 🙂

      • Thanks! A falconet is on a carriage and us maybe 7+ foot long with a crew of two, so maybe not. Thanks on the Aztecs, I did an inventory and it will be closer to 250 figs, so I have a ways to go. There are some Conquistador cavalry, but that’s not big enough I assume. We’ll see, maybe I’ll do a tank to break the Aztec tedium.

          The falconet sounds like on its own it might be a bit small. One of the rules I put in was that you can do a diorama since with that the “whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” and no one thing has to be as big as an ogre. If you want to do some Conquistador cavalry then I’d say if you did something with them like that picture of your Eagle Warriors where you had some nice ground with scattered rocks and vegetation, with a suitable background (liked that step pyramid) then that would count as a diorama for the challenge. The falconet and crew could also be part of such a diorama. Perhaps the Spanish has just finished their artillery bombardment and are sending out their cavalry to mop up in the ensuing chaos? Maybe a couple of Aztecs: novices running away in the face of the cannons and charging horsemen, or perhaps some eagle warriors standing strong attempting to rally their fellows to meet the attack with their own counter-charge?

          A tank would certainly work; no issue there at all.

  31. Alright, I guess it’s time to paint something big! It’s a good thing that this is a two-month challenge, as i won’t have much (/any) hobby time in the last two weeks of May, and this week I’m trying to finish up a pair of human-sized models. But I’ll try to get something large-ish in June, which will be a nice change of pace!

    • That’s what I’m doing as well and one of the things I like about painting challenges. They motivate me to maybe dig out a project that has been sitting for far too long like my aforementioned friend’s pig demon or my bloat drone that I’ve abandoned working on twice now. Will be interesting to see what you do next, after that excellent donkey … er, I mean monkey pirate!

    • Neat, I’m very glad I made it two months. (Well, that and it lets me catch my breath a bit after the April challenge, if I’m being honest.) After your mighty Iron Warriors/Plague Marines rhino as well as some of your other old school armour, I’m looking forward what will be next to enter your mechanized forces.

  36. I don’t think I’d mind being consumed in a gout of acidic blight quite so much if I knew that the drone responsible was called Becky.

    • Uh oh, not the big guns! I’ll pass along your suggestion to Mortarion the next time I see him (one can only take him in small doses; he has a bit of a toxic personality) about giving all of the daemon engines nice, girls’ names to increase their combat effectiveness. All of this talk makes me want to go watch that scene from _Full Metal Jacket_ … you know the one? 🙂

        • Haha, yes, you clearly do know the one! I love your bloat drone quote … I’m going to have to remember to steal that when I finally get Becky done.

          I have a nagging (or rather nurgling?) feeling now that Mary Jane would have been a better name for my bloater, even if Beck is more alliterative. Ah well, one thing I have no shortage of is hideously neglected daemon engines….

  38. A pretty big challenge covering a couple of months, so a lot could happen! My plan for the immediate future was mainly going to be painting little people, but it turns out I do have a couple of things that would fit in with this challenge perfectly (and they’re not tanks, but no spoilers)! So, count me in! 🙂
